Two-storey extension to 1950’s semi detached house, Saintfield, Lisburn

A new two-storey extension to the rear of an existing 1950’s semi detached house for a young couple living in Saintfield.
The proposed volume, containing the new kitchen and living spaces was created by working closely with the geometry of the existing roof and protruding stair to the rear elevation. Solid walls, rendered smooth and rough enclose the space.
Subtle shifts in surface and texture provide a sense of scale similar to that of the existing house, whilst continuation of datums and materials help to retain it’s character. A new lantern over the existing staircase links old and new rooms, filtering daylight into the hallway below.
